“I wonder if it seems to you
That all the lives we ever lived, And all the lives to be,
Are full of trees and changing leaves...”

The photographs in A Faint Green Quickens were made over the course of the past year in and around my mother’s home in Watertown Massachusetts. In the fall I moved into an apartment of my own after living with only my mother for the majority of my life. As I returned to visit, it became increasingly apparent that we were both going through periods of great change in our lives. She has found herself to be alone most of the time, with very few outlets for her strength and nurturing. In the pictures I seek to show my mother’s strength and vulnerability as she navigates through a transitory period, struggling to find meaning and connection in a later stage of her life. The seasonal growth and death of the vines surrounding her home serve as a marker of time, and a metaphor for the ever changing nature of our lives.
